Caring for Our Community - Palestra Spa & Carolina Breast Friends

When Palestra selected Carolina Breast Friends as its primary charity partner for 2026, the goal was clear: create spaces where survivors and thrivers feel seen, supported, and able to truly exhale. The Rest & Restore retreat was the first expression of that commitment—a peaceful afternoon dedicated entirely to nervous system relief, connection, and gentle care.
Nearly 30 women filled the studio, engaging in restorative practices and Reiki-style energy work in an environment that felt more like a sanctuary than a typical spa. For many, it wasn't just about the scheduled modalities; it was about being in a space where every detail communicated one message: you are not alone in this.
A Room Full of Survivors
From the moment guests arrived, the atmosphere was one of recognition—a shared experience and the relief of not having to explain their journey. As one attendee, Sherry R., stated: "It was a fantastic event. I really enjoyed meeting so many others (Survivors)!" Her words highlight a core truth of this partnership: community is as therapeutic as any treatment.
Carolina Breast Friends has spent years creating connections through support groups, education, and programs that ensure no one faces diagnosis, treatment, or recovery alone. This retreat added another layer by giving survivors a chance to bond in a setting where rest, not
resilience, was the main focus.
Restorative Care That Goes Beyond the Table
At Palestra, the emphasis is on nervous system regulation: how gentle movement, sound, and therapeutic touch help the body move from constant alertness to a healing state. For women bearing the burden of aggressive treatments, long-term side effects, and emotional stress of survivorship, that kind of rest isn't a luxury—it's a necessity.
Roslyn T., who has been involved with CBF since 2022, stated clearly: "Wow, this Reiki experience was much needed! Thank you, Palestra and Carolina Breast Friends for partnering to make this happen for us!" Her feedback reflects the core of integrated wellness—how even a single afternoon of supportive touch and deep rest can create a lasting sense of relief that extends well beyond the drive home.
It's the Way You Do It
What happens in the room is important, but how it happens is just as crucial. Palestra's approach focuses on consent, personalization, and relationship-based care, especially for people whose bodies have already endured a lot. Clear communication about touch, options for every posture, and no pressure to perform—the retreat was designed so each participant could listen to her own limits and be accepted as she is.
Adrianne D., an 8.5-year survivor, expressed it well: "That was such a special, relaxing, and restorative experience! It's not just the wonderful programs you offer; it's the way you deliver them and interact with everyone." That level of attention is what transforms wellness into genuine community care. People leave feeling not just attended to, but truly cared for.
A Year-Long Commitment, One Retreat at a Time
This Rest & Restore event was fully donated by Palestra as part of its 2026 partnership with CBF, but the afternoon felt less like a one-time gift and more like a beginning. The year-long collaboration is built around quarterly activations that combine gentle movement, deep rest, and trauma-sensitive support for both survivors and caregivers.
Whether it's a retreat, a sound bath evening, or a restorative yoga series, each gathering offers the women of CBF more chances to experience integrated care—care that respects both the medical realities of cancer and the emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of healing. Palestra and Carolina Breast Friends are working toward a specific goal: creating a world where wellness is not separate from survivorship, but an essential part of it.
Looking Ahead
The feedback from this first retreat will influence what happens next—more healing activities, more opportunities for connection, and more chances for survivors to feel supported by their community. The message from the women who attended is clear: this kind of space is essential, and it's worth expanding.
To the nearly 30 survivors who trusted Palestra and Carolina Breast Friends with their time and presence: thank you. Your voices are shaping the growth of this partnership, one breath at a time.
